PIG WAR PICNIC

JULY 4TH COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.

Kiwanis Club of Friday Harbor serves the San Juan Islands here in beautiful Washington State.  If you live here in the Islands, you may have enjoyed the Pig War Picnic we sponsor every 4th of July! Great food, great music and fun had by young and old.

WHAT WE DO

FUNDRAISING

The Kiwanis Club puts more than $20,000 a year back into the local economy through our toy drive, the scholarships we give annually and the many local events we participate in that support Island Rec, other local organizations and our local children.

Kiwanis is an organization of volunteers dedicated to changing lives... but to do that, you have to wear the right attire :-)

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Kiwanis helps out the community through donations. The Family Resource Center received a check in the amount of $5,000 from the Kiwanis Club of Friday Harbor for their work in the community. The Family Resource Center is the clearing house for San Juan Island and provides many services for children on the island. This was the largest single donation made by the local service club and they were pleased to be able to donate a sizable amount to such a worthy organization

SCHOLARSHIPS

We were very pleased to give $20,000 this year to 20 graduating seniors who will use the scholarships to attend colleges or trade schools all around the country.

Over the last eight years, Kiwanis has provided over $120,000 in scholarships. With a senior class of 45 students, Kiwanis was able to award most of them with a scholarship to continue education at a college or a trade school. President Sharon Hooper stated, “I can think of no better gift than helping young people to continue their education. With a good education, all kinds of doors can be opened that will have profound effect upon their lives. Every little bit helps when you head off to college for the first time. The local Kiwanis Club feels fortunate to be able to play a small part in helping 15 local students start the next big phase of their lives.

Last year, the 4th of July was a great day for a picnic and an even better day for families on San Juan Island. The annual Pig War Picnic presented by the Kiwanis Club of Friday Harbor was again a great success. The proceeds from this event  are returned to the children of Friday Harbor. We were very pleased to give $20,000 this year to 20 graduating seniors who will use the scholarships to attend colleges or trade schools all around the country.

We are excited to announce a fabulous new venue for 2024.  Kiwanis will move the picnic from the current location at the baseball field to the County Fairgrounds on Argyle Ave.  The new location offers a great improvement for 2024.  There is a large parking area for both the picnic and parade. There is ample space for island vendors of local arts and crafts.

Introducing the Bite of San Juan.  Modeled after the Bite of Seattle, it is a way to taste a variety of food from local restaurants and food vendors.  We are offering an expanded menu including, authentic Mexican Carnitas with homemade tortillas, Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Kosher Hot Dogs, Corn on a stick,  Strawberry Shortcake, Ice Cream Sundaes, Cake Walk and Beer Garden.

The Tom Henry Band will be on stage, and there will be lots of activities for kids of all ages including Three-Legged Races, Gunny Sack Races, Egg Tossing and Watermelon eating contest.

We are now opening applications for arts and crafts booths.  We welcome all local artists and craftsmen. Space is limited and is on a first come basis.

All proceeds from the event will be returned to community kids.
